MSC Izivunguvungu sailing report week ending 30th October '22

October 30, 2022

The Cape doctor was in full swing this past week and as a result we were not able to safely get out on the water.  The students had looked forward to sailing False Bay Yacht Club's L26 Kayo in the Wednesday night racing but unfortunately racing was also cancelled due to the high winds.  As a result we focused on maintenance around the sailing centre and to our fleet of Mirror dinghies.

Tuesday 25.10.22

Once more south easterly winds are apon us for the rest of the week ahead. Regatta plans and repair lists were already in place by Mr Eldred, as the wind was too strong for sailing. We also have the students formed into study groups revising as the end of year school exams are coming up, would be great help if we had someone who could assist us with this in future.

Wednesday 26.10.22

As planned the students were going to sail on the L26 Kayo that belongs too False bay yacht club, and it was ready for the race as we prepared it the week before. Unfortunately the race was canceled due to too much wind. This was not all bad as Marcello invited us along for a talk at False Bay Yacht Club with Patrick Loydell, he is a National Racing Judge in South African Sailing. Students learnt a lot about rules and tactics during the discussion. Many thanks for the invitation from the yacht club.

Thursday 27.10.22

I visited the primary schools in Ocean View as they still have a large number of interested pupils that want to join the sailing school, so there are lots of kids to be picked up when our bus is back. We also assisted the Navy Sailing Centre on this day as the Fast 42 yacht, Amoya Amusha, had to be put back in the water. This is the same yacht that I did most of my keel boat sailing on, so hopefully we can get the older students involved with sailing with the Navy in the future again.

Friday 28.10.22

I came down with flu so Eldred had to run things on his own, this went well as I organised transport for the students. The students worked well on their Mirror dollies and some fiberglass repairs.

Saturday 29.10.22

Eldred and students continued work in the workshops and fixing doors that were blown off from the strong wind, the buildings are very old and run down, so it takes alot of time and effort maintaining them. We also need assistance from anyone who is in the building trade to assist from time to time with the permission from the Navy. We are looking forward to meeting with Geoff Genricks from the marine insurance company, Intasure, in the week to come.
